“Topsham’s Avocet”
Due to prints being produced, this piece can be reserved now for collection in early Nov.
In my humble option, the avocet is one of the most elegant birds on the Exe Estuary - not only is it the symbol of conservation, but it is instantly recognisable with its slender upturned beak and striking black-and-white plumage. I was inspired to paint this piece after watching the avocets at sunset at the bird hide on the Exe Estuary; standing to attention as the rest bustle around them, all the while, the sunlight glimmering from the water and reeds around them.
To capture the moment, I used my signature textured gold and gilding to reflect the glow of evening light on the water. The result is a painting that celebrates not only the beauty of the avocet, but also the sense of stillness and wonder that comes from the beauty along the Exe Estuary and evening light.

The beautiful shift of gold…
The gold tones in this artwork are not 24-carat and may evolve gracefully over time, developing soft shades of patina and aged gold. This transformation is intentional - a living element that allows the piece to grow and change with you.
Some surfaces are deliberately left unsealed to encourage this natural evolution. The resulting patina is a celebrated feature, making each artwork truly unique.
