The Robin - “Stand tall”.

Ever since i’ve been lucky enough to tame two Robins in my own garden, I was always in awe of their brave, bold and friendly nature, so fearless as they came to sit with me while I drank tea, or hopped onto the window ledge as if to say hello. It felt like a rare connection with nature that was comforting yet fleeting: Knowing that robins usually only live for 13 months, I enjoyed the company of my little robin friends for a short while. Scientists believe that Robins can recognise individual humans, which might explain why they often feel like familiar companions rather than just another bird in the garden.

Robins have therefore always captivated me—their boldness, confidence and the quiet sense of knowing in their eyes. No matter the season, they are always present, standing their ground with their unmistakable fiery red breast: Each robin breast has a completely unique pattern, much like a fingerprint.

It’s easy to see why they’re one of the most well-loved birds in the British garden. They make the most of every moment in their short lives; among the first to break the silence of dawn with their song and one of the last to fall quiet at night, sometimes even singing under streetlights.

Despite their charming appearance, they are fiercely territorial, quick to defend their nests. Their resilience, courage and strong parental instincts make them a powerful symbol of protection and determination.

The saying “when robins are near, loved ones appear” resonates with so many and I can see why. There’s something comforting about their presence, a moment of connection with the wild, a quiet acquaintance of nature in an otherwise busy world.
