"Exe Estuary Blue Lobster"

This original painting of a lobster is part of my new collection; 'Living Life on the Exe' - a body of work inspired by a connection to place and the coastal palette of the Exe Estuary that so often draws me in. This piece is available to view and purchase from Seaglass Gallery in Lympstone throughout April 2026 and is a celebration of the estuary, and the quiet luxuries, of the place we are lucky enough to call home.

This piece is a contemporary exploration of one of the coast’s most striking and characterful creatures - the lobster. I have become known for my lobster pieces, and this work continues that signature theme that fits beautifully with the luxury and charm of a coastal collection.

If you're lucky, lobsters can be found along the rocky shores and tidal waters of the Exe Estuary and South Devon coast. Both a familiar and elusive presence, they're often hidden beneath the surface yet intrinsically tied to the rhythm of coastal life. They are also a true local luxury - part of the area’s fishing heritage.

Here, the lobster is brought into focus with a contemporary quality. Its form wrapping around the edge of the canvas. Rich, layered blues dominate the palette - echoing the shifting tones of deep water and inspired by the extraordinary rarity of blue lobsters, which occur naturally in only about one in two million individuals.

This work embraces a more expressive approach, combining painterly detail with looser, gestural marks and flicks of paint which almost always feature in my work. The use of mixed media adds depth and variation, with areas of gold catching the light and contrasting against the matte surface of the canvas. These details bring a sense of vibrancy and modernity, elevating a traditional coastal subject into something more dynamic and unexpected.

No coastal collection would be complete without a lobster and this piece remains rooted in the same inspiration. It reflects not only the wildlife of the Exe Estuary but also the textures, colours and quiet drama found beneath its surface. A one-off original, this lobster study is a celebration and a contemporary nod to the sea.
