“Exmouth Mussels”
This original painting is part of my new collection; 'Living Life on the Exe' - a body of work inspired by a connection to place and the coastal palette of the Exe Estuary that so often draws me in. This piece is available to view and purchase from Seaglass Gallery in Lympstone throughout April 2026 and is a celebration of the estuary, and the quiet luxuries, of the place we are lucky enough to call home.
“Exmouth Mussels”
This piece captures the quiet beauty of the Exe Estuary’s mussel shells - those familiar blues, silvers and charcoal greys that locals know so well. For those of us who have picked mussels for supper, caught a glimmer of a bleached blue shell in the golden sands on a sunny day or walked the mudflats and paused on the sea wall to admire the view, these shells are a familiar sight speckled along the sands and clinging to rocks: They speak of speak of Sunday mornings on the beach with family, the smell of fresh salty air and the reminder that we are lucky to live in a place where the river meets the sea.
Every shell in this piece was collected from Exmouth Beach at low tide. Meticulously observed, studied and recreated on textured deckle-edged paper and float mounted within a beautiful wooden white-washed frame for a coastal look at feel. The shells are arranged in a perfect circle; a contemporary, yet calming composition; reminiscent of estuary life and the familiar turning tides and seasons of those who live here.
Farmed in the Exe Estuary, between Powderham, Starcross and Lympstone, the Estuary has become known for growing high-quality mussels. These beautiful and familiar shells, with their connection to the nutrient rich waters and diverse local marine life. This large statement piece is thoughtfully framed in a contemporary white-washed wooden frame that echoes the colours of the coast and the sun-bleached boards of boats that sit on the water.
