"Silver sprats of the Exe”

This piece is a celebration of one of the Exe Estuary’s vital little players - the Sprat. These small, silvery shoals frequently glide through the tidal waters and shallows of the Exe, forming a crucial part of the rich food chain that sustains everything from curlews and other estuary birds to the larger fish prized by local fishermen and seafood enthusiasts.

Contrasting against deep, inky background, layers of cool blues, luminous silvers and soft whites have been carefully built up to capture the iridescent, almost metallic quality of their scales. Delicate splatters of turquoise and gold add hints of light, movement and the sparkle of sunlit water, bringing the shoal to life.

This fun and contemporary miniature original continues my ongoing exploration of the wildlife and hidden treasures found in and around the Exe Estuary. It speaks directly to those who love the coast, the daily catch, fresh local seafood and the timeless art of fishing along the South Devon shoreline.

A one-off original, this sprat study is both a small jewel of coastal art and a loving nod to the estuary’s living waters. This piece has been thoughtfully framed in coastal style white with a deep edge mount, no glass, to allowing the original artwork to be appreciated more clearly.

This original fish painting is part of my new collection; 'Living Life on the Exe' - a body of work inspired by a connection to place and the coastal palette of the Exe Estuary that so often draws me in. This piece is available to view and purchase from Seaglass Gallery in Lympstone throughout April 2026 and is a celebration of the estuary, and the quiet luxuries, of the place we are lucky enough to call home.
